Totalkiss.com meet Ne-Yo
Totalkiss.com caught up with
Ne-Yo while he was in the UK promoting his new album,
Year Of The Gentleman. It’s not released here until September 15th but being Ne-Yo, everybody wants a piece of him. He’s been hitting the London club scene getting his party on and meeting lots of fans. He’s also taken time out from his press schedule to hit the red carpet for
The Dark Knight premiere in Leicester Square.
So you’re working hard promoting the new album, do you like it over here?
I love it over here. Closer went number 1 and I’ve always had really cool and supportive fan base. I had to come back and show some love.
I feel really appreciated over here. Don’t get me wrong, I feel appreciated in America but America is very much programmed to dig a certain thing. For example, ‘Closer’ took a minute for my American fans to grasp on to. Change in America is taboo. They’re either going to love you for it or hate you for it. At first they were like, “Hmm, we don’t know about this one Ne-Yo.” Then they started understanding where I was going with it and they started liking the song.
I heard it was about the London club scene, is it?
Yeah, last time I was over here we went to a really small club; it almost felt like a lounge. A very energetic lounge, packed wall to wall. There were people, hands in the air, eyes closed in a trance. And there was that bang bang bang house music all night long, with the green lasers; it was such a cool vibe! I was never really a fan of house, dance, techno, but that music is about how it makes you feel and that’s always been my M.O. I try to do music that will make you feel something, some type of emotion, and that was the common ground I found with this music. I would never try to disrespect anybody who does that music as a profession. I didn’t want to emulate it, I wanted to pay homage to it so I tried to take that vibe and do the Ne-Yo thing to it.
Your club in West London opened at the weekend. Was that something you’ve always wanted to do?
Yeah, the 142 Bar & Lounge. I always envisioned I would start with music and then venture out into other things. This is my first venture outside of writing and singing. The club scene out here is so very cool to me, I thought yeah lets give it a shot, lets see what happens.
So will you be booking the DJs?
I can definitely go over there and say, “I met a cool DJ; I want him to spin for a few hours on Saturday night.” The fact that it’s my club; they’ll go “Yeah whatever you want.” I can also go and post up in the back and be one of those people with my eyes closed. My company Compound, we do Saturday nights over there so that’ll be the night I go over there.
You have a company?! What else does Compound do?
Compound Entertainment is my production company and we’re in the process of putting lots of things together. We’re about to become a full-fledged record label but there’s so much red tape and politics into becoming a record label the right way.
We’re having trouble finding serious artists because everyone wants to be a star tomorrow. They think, “Oh, I’m signed to Ne-Yo so it should happen right now.” This is a process, I’m 12 years in! We had 3 artists that swore they were ready to go. So, we set up a showcase in New York. I have high profile friends and Jay Z happened to be in New York that week, Denzel Washington was there, Beyonce came with J, Akon was there. So these guys step on stage and see Jay Z right there and their knees are shaking, the voice goes and they forget a dance step. I’m like, “You said you were ready. I’m showing you guys what you’re stepping into.” Its not overnight, there’s development and you got to work at it. They weren’t ready to work so out of those 3 one is still around. And we’re looking.
Will you be doing a TV show to find your next signing like Puff Daddy and Pussycat Dolls have done?
I’d rather keep it underground. No disrespect to Puffy or Pussycat Dolls but it feels more real when you do it without a camera crew following you. You get those people doing stuff specifically for camera cos they’re going to get on TV. When you know there’s no cameras around, the only benefit you’re going to get out is the work you put in. There’s nobody watching you.
So what else have you got lined up?
I’m still writing for a number of people: John Legend, Ciara, Lionel Richie, LeToya Luckett, Jennifer Hudson, Whitney Houston, Leona Lewis, Pussycat Dolls…
I’ve got a movie I’m about to start shooting in November. Be looking for that towards end of next year. At the moment it’s called Summer Romance but it’s going to change cos that sucks.
Come January next year I’m doing a world tour with the Pussycat Dolls.
I will be around.

Bex gets it on... with Mo!

During a game of the party classic 'pass the orange' on Thursday night, things got a bit heated when, after dropping the fruit, Mo had to take a forfeit... without hesitation, Bex piped up: "You've got to snog me!"
Once everyone got their breath back from the shock, they went at it. Big time.
And guess who was a little gutted...?

Even though there's 'nothing between them', as they insist on pointing out every five minutes (between tounge sessions under the covers), Luke was far from pleased at the forfeit!

But one good thing did come out of it - during a heart to heart in the bedroom after 'said incident', they both finally admitted to having feelings for one another... aaahhhh!
Better make the most of it - Bex is red-hot fave to get the chop later!

Sara visits heaven

The luxury shopping arrived on Thursday afternoon, and amongst it all was one of Big Brother's ever-changing special prizes, which Mohamed nabbed.
It was for a trip to heaven - whoever had it was able to visit the heavenly side for the night... he was gonna cash it in, when Rex pointed out that he could give it to someone else if he wanted...

So, after a bit of deliberation, Mo decided not to use it himself, but to give it to Sara, who's never actually been to heaven. Aww, bless.
She was even given a camcorder to film her 'experience' as a tourist...
