Slumdog Sale?

The dad of one of the child stars of Slumdog Millionaire's denied newspaper reports he'd tried to sell his daughter.

The News of the World claimed over the weekend that Rubina Ali's dad was willing to put her up for adoption at a price.

He says the reports are all lies, although he admits meeting a reporter who was posing as a wealthy Arab sheikh.

Narrow escape!

A British soldier serving in Afghanistan's had a miraculous escape.

A bullet passed straight through Private Leon Wilson's combat helmet without injuring him.

He'd been firing his machine gun for seven hours during a battle against the Taliban when he was struck by a round from an AK47.

The bullet missed his forehead by 2mm and went out the other side!

Congregation KO!

Churchgoers have been praised by police for rugby-tackling a a man with a knife to the ground.

Members of the Church of the Latter-Day Saints in Swindon were attending Sunday worship yesterday lunchtime when the incident happened.

A man began acting in a strange way and when he was ushered outside he pulled out a large kitchen knife.

A 34-year-old man's been arrested.

it's all got a bit noisy in some of Gloucestershire's libraries...

and for once teenagers aren't getting the blame.

The county council's installing sound systems in all new and upgraded libraries.

But it's not going down well with everyone.

Older readers looking for books have complained they're struggling to concentrate.

Best bar in Britain

A pub in Norwich has been named the best in Britain and one of the best in the world.

The Gardener's Arms is well known in the area, but the locals know it best as 'The Murderers'.

The pub is in the Timberhill area of the city, and dates back to the 16th century.

It's been voted the best watering hole in the UK and in the top 10 globally.

It's thought it stands out because of the traditional exposed beams and traditional atmosphere.

A new environmental report reckons around 8,500 homes and businesses in Kings Lynn could be destroyed if we had bad floods.

Homeowner Hell

Falling house prices are meaning more and more home owners in Britain are going into negative equity.

It's a scary word if you've got a mortgage...it basically means the loan you are paying on a property is worth more than the house itself!

The Council of Mortgage Lenders says almost 1.2million people owed more than their house was worth, by the end of February.

It's almost as bad as it was during the last housing recession, back in 1993.

Young women are putting babies before marriage, according to new snapshot of modern Britain

Women are more likely to give birth before they turn 25 than get married, according to official statistics that illustrate how British family life has been transformed in a generation.

The report also showed that the UK had become a nation of people who travel longer distances to work, take more foreign holidays and fill their homes with electrical gadgets.

The Governemnt want us to ditch our conventional cars and go electric!

They reckon it's the future of driving and the way we all need to go.

At the moment electric cars can only travel about 70 miles before they need recharging.

Gordon Browns trying to encourage us to buy greener motors by offering up to £5000 off a new electric car.

Search for 'suspicious' devices

The police are searching a farm in Cambridgeshire again this morning.

Officers found several suspicious devices at a property in Coton yesterday

A 100 metre cordon was placed around the address in Madingley Road.

The police say they'd gone there to look for firearms.

Two men are being questioned at the moment.

Cycle Sales Soar

More and more of us are getting on our bikes.

Commuters are taking advantage of tax breaks and turning to pedal power to beat the recession - according to industry figures.

Halfords says 34,000 people bought bikes through the Government's Cycle2Work scheme in the past year, that's an increase of 50%.

Oprah date for Maddie parents

The parents of Madeleine McCann are hoping new images will help in the search for their missing daughter.

Kate and Gerry are going on Oprah Winfrey's chat show in America next month to mark the second anniversary of Madeleine's disappearance.

She was three at the time so the family have altered some pictures using age-progression techniques to produce images of how she might look now.

Remembering Reds Fans

Footy fans are remembering the victims of the Hillsborough tragedy today.

It's exactly 20 years since the crush at Sheffield Wednesday's ground, which killed 96 people.

A two minutes silence will be held at 3:06pm - the exact time Liverpool's FA Cup semi final with Nottingham Forest was abandoned back in 1989.

It was the worst tragedy in British sporting history.

Sprinter sorry for Jamaican jibes

The world's fastest man has apologised for comments suggesting all Jamaican youngsters use marijuana.

Usain Bolt was quoted in a German newspaper as saying Jamaicans learn how to roll a joint when they're children.

The sprinter now says his comments were unfortunate, and that he's never used the drug while a competitive athlete.

Jack in Jail

Jack Tweed has been given a 12 week jail sentence for assaulting a taxi driver.

The trial took place while his wife Jade Goody was battling with the final stages of cancer.

He was told his sentence would have been longer, were it not for 'recent events'.

Tenants flee after facebook faux-pas

Tenants have been thrown out of a flat - after posting party pictures on Facebook.

Their landlady saw photos of her trashed two-bedroom flat in Folkestone in Kent on the networking website.

Two flatmates - in their early 20s - have reportedly since fled, leaving thousands of pounds of damage and months of unpaid rent.

Skin Cancer cases jump

Young women are being warned about skin cancer.

Sunbeds and binge tanning on holiday mean its now the most common type of cancer for women in their 20's - it's overtaken cervical cancer as the biggest killer.

Doctors say they expect cases to keep rising by as much as 70% in the next 15 years.

Twits on the Road

Young people are being reminded about the dangers of driving whilst doing other things - like using Twitter!

As many as 9% are boasting of their antics by "tweeting and driving" - so says research.

One motorist told Twitter: "I'm driving with my knees and peeling an orange - probably not the safest thing to be doing".

Another said: "Irresponsible twitter driving, woo!"

If the police catch you using a handheld mobile whilst you are driving you will be given a £60 fine and 3 points on your licence.

If you cause another driver to swerve because you are messing with your phone you could be sent to prison for 2 years.
